No-exam life insurance

What accelerated underwriting is, who qualifies, how it works, and what happens if you don't meet the requirements.

Most major carriers now provide accelerated underwriting: applicants in certain age and amount ranges get approved using the application, pharmacy records, driving records and other information rather than a paramedical exam. Some decisions come back the same business day. Each quote notes whether that product needs an exam, might need one, or doesn't.

What it changes

Skipping an exam doesn't skip underwriting. Your answers get verified, and a policy based on false information can be voided during the first two years. If the carrier's records raise questions, they may ask for tests; you pick whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Usually people under 60 buying typical amounts, no significant health issues, and haven't used tobacco for a year or longer. If you've had recent blood work from a doctor visit, some carriers accept that in place of an exam.

A paramedical exam, if needed, is ordinarily 20 to 30 minutes at your home or workplace in the Soledad area, at no charge to you. For people in good health, the exam results can actually improve your rate class, so it's not necessarily a drawback.
